Vela was proud to be alongside Forsyth Medical Center on Tuesday for its announcement of the Maya Angelou Center for Women’s Health and Wellness. The center is the region’s first to coordinate comprehensive healthcare and wellness services specifically for women.

Vela partner Mike Horn coordinated telephone and in-person interviews between local media and several FMC leaders, including Jeff Lindsay, President, Chere Gregory, MD, director of neurosciences, and Kirsten Royster, vice president of the Forsyth Cardiac and Vascular Center. Additionally, nurses involved in the health navigators initiative were interviewed after the announcement. The event was abuzz with anticipation and excitement over the launch, in particular over Dr. Angelou and her involvement.

Dr. Angelou, world-renowned author and poet and Winston-Salem resident, presented before an audience of doctors, nurses and community leaders to discuss the importance of targeted healthcare for women. An eloquent speaker whose words resonate with generations of women, Dr. Angelou gave a resounding endorsement. Angelou poignantly opened by singing a line inspired by Genesis: “When it look like the sun won’t shine anymore, God put a rainbow in the clouds.” Angelou said FMC’s new center is a “rainbow” of hope for women to seek a more integrated and complete approach to healthcare. It was a profound honor to listen to Dr. Angelou and her partnership with FMC represents a significant investment in the well-being of women in North Carolina.
